During the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Benjamin Franklin was asked by a citizen what kind of government our new nation was to have. "A Republic," Franklin said, "if you can keep it."

45* and his GOP enablers now openly seek to put 45* above the law, turning Franklin's admonition on its head: giving us a dictatorship, if we allow it.

It's not illegal if Dear Leader does it because anything Dear Leader does is always for the good of the country.

Despite the obvious absurdity here, this is precisely a circular argument and thus a classic logical fallacy (it's also the appeal to authority fallacy).

The president's* legal team implies that he only acts in our best interests and that his means will always justify his ends.
The president's* tweets and conduct more accurately describe him as a sophomanic and dangerous narcissist, nihilist, demagogue, sociopath, con-man/grifter, manipulator and a "dark personality" whose goals are to protect his fragile ego and personal enrichment.
The implications of their defense of the president* will lead at best to a corrupt monarchy and at worst to a destructive dictatorship.

Vote on November 3, 2020 to remove the existential threat to our Republic and restore honor and integrity to the office of the President of the United States.

Makes perfect sense. If a president does something good for the nation, that automatically helps his reelection. And if doing something good requires some reciprocity, well, that's how the world works, and that's proper and it can be called "quid pro quo". If we are giving money to Ukraine but they are squandering it then it is good to challenge that even if it helps you in reelection. I think Schumer just doesn't like it when logic trumps his agenda.

as a citizen, here is my concern, and no one has mentioned it. If he's acquitted, let's say; he was seeking to damage a political rival now, an ambassador as well. So, there is a private citizen who criticizes him on social media, or let's say he decides he does not like some private citizen, for whatever reason. This would seem to give him, or he would think it gives him, the power to use government resources to get revenge on whomever he wanted. He could argue he was doing it on 'national interest'…or, any other president elected (Democrat or Republican) would have the power to do the same, and this could be seen as a standard. A Republic or Democratic congress could ask for witnesses for whatever crime they think a President did, and the President could say, well, Trump did not have to, so I don't have to. Seems we are setting up the President as King, or despot…

In January 1999, Sen. Joe Biden argued against the need to depose additional witnesses or seek new evidence in a memo sent to fellow Democrats ahead of President Bill Clinton’s impeachment trial.
Biden four-page document, titled “Arguments in Support of a Summary Impeachment Trial,” on Jan. 5, 1999
Biden wrote, "The Senate may dismiss articles of impeachment without holding a full trial or taking new evidence. Put another way, the Constitution does not impose on the Senate the duty to hold a trial..
Later in the same papers, he wrote, "In a number of previous impeachment trials, the Senate has reached the judgment that its constitutional role as a sole trier of impeachments does not require it to take new evidence or hear live witness testimony.”
Interesting what can be learned with a bit of reading…

Schumer is twisting AD's argument and he knows it. All Schumer's examples involve crimes… they are false comparisons. Dershowitz wss saying that absent a crime a quid pro quo that benefits a President electorally cannot constitute an impeachable offense. He is not saying that a president can commit crimes.
