Citing Science | Crushing the Soul of Flat Earth [part 3]

well hi everyone and greetings from
Northern Michigan this is Bob the Science Guy you know I had an
interesting experience today at the office I had a patient come in and I
happened to notice that he came from Lansing which is quite a ways from where
my office was today and if he came from Lansing he had obviously passed half a
dozen doctors that do what I do so I asked him why did you come up to
see me and he leaned a little closer to me and said because I’m a fan of the
secret YouTube channel you have and he gave me this thing that he made for me
so I want to dedicate this show to Bryan thank you very much for coming up and
showing your appreciation that really meant a lot to me today it actually made
my day now today we’re going to go ahead and finish our interview with Dr. Pinizzotto. Now sleeping warrior had misused a demonstration on YouTube that Dr. Pinizzotto had done when he was with Wentworth Technical Institute concerning buoyancy
and density and why submarines come up and down so I’m gonna go ahead and play
a little clip from that and show sleeping warriors comments on it and
then we’ll come back but what we also believe in is industry collaborative
interdisciplinary learning Ok so the interdisciplinary part is that we
needed to know some engineering we need to do the experiment we need to talk to
our physics guys and we need to talk to the math people about how do we
calculate the volume of the ball how does industry come into this let’s say
you’re one of our students and you go and you get a job at General Dynamics
Boat Works in Connecticut what do they do they make submarines you want
submarines to both float and to sink you know now that you have to design a
submarine so it’s less dense than water but you also know you want that
submarine to go underwater great you know that that submarine has to be
denser than the water so now as an engineer you know you have to develop a
system that will make that submarine at your command
be either less dense the water or a more dense than water it’s a perfect
application to bring industry direct industry collaboration into this funny
little experiment which started with a simple question why does a bowling ball
float now I think based on the first two episodes of this interview it’s very
apparent that sleeping warrior is misapplying principles to this video that
Dr. Pinizzotto made and Dr. Pinizzotto is not very pleased about it so without
further ado let’s queue up the music and go see what Dr. Pinizzotto has to say
about all this if you would please go ahead and go down there and click on the
captions now so that you can clearly see what Dr. Pinizzotto is talking about now
you’ve taken an opportunity to actually look at the video that was made based on
your video do you have any comments that you would like to make to the viewers of
that video to make sure that they understand your position relative to
that video Sure well first of all I think it was taken out of context, and I wasn’t contacted about it. And both of those things are a MAJOR PROBLEM Thirdly it was not scientific you would never use somebody’s work without citing them in science, actually even in journalism you wouldn’t. I was actually
becoming kind of aggravated with parts of my presentation being taken out of context without talking to me.
that’s the first thing second thing is you know there are lots of different
ways that we could have done that particular demonstration. One way like this because everybody in the audience the equation or put the equations up on the screen and do all that kind of stuff and ask everybody, but that wasn’t the point. That was not a good way to do it. So using the short hand ‘Density’ I assumed that people in the audience would know that there were forces at play. The people I was talking to were potentially coming there to be engineer or to be a scientist or to be a designer or an architect and the assumption I made I think is a very safe assumption would be that they had some physics
background so they would know that for those bowling balls to be there there had to be a
equilibrium of forces otherwise they would be rolling off the table and rolling through the auditorium And so taking the word ‘Density’ out of context talking about the density of the bowling balls relative to their volume its not even the density of the materials they are made out of its the density overall Now we could talk about the density of a ship in a couple of different ways the
over density of the ship has to be such that it will float That means that its density has got to be less than the density or the volume has to be less than its weight or it won’t float and that’s something to keep in mind there’s a couple of misconceptions about
why things fall for example and if you could just address those I’d like to
finish up with that now it’s been said that the reason that things fall to the
ground you know like you pick up a rock and drop it and it falls back down to
the ground it’s been said that the reason it falls is that you pick it up
put energy into it and it wants to return to where it came from
is that why objects fall or are outside forces involved? Ah NO that’s NOT why objects fall the outside force we are talking about is of course the force due to gravity. So let’s think about this for a moment So let’s suppose that I took my 16 pound
bowling ball and I equally round piece of Styrofoam so that it would have the same volume but a completely different weight. If I drop them and we didn’t have any air from the same height they would hit the ground together Even though one had overall a much much higher density than the other. Right? yes. The bowling ball was 16 pounds but the Styrofoam which was this big around weighted only about an ounce If I drop them out side in the air the styrofoam ball would get blown around But if there wasn’t any air, in a vacuum chamber, and dropped them, they would drop at the same rate. That’s because gravity is the force between any two objects and the force is proportional to the two masses and the distance. As it turns out the earth is so massive they accelerate at the same rate and hit the ground at the same time. So if you were to take the three bowling balls that you floated in
the fish tank and you were to roll them off the roof of the building at exactly
the same time because they are relatively heavy which means mass times
gravity that’s weight because they were relatively heavy compared to their
surface area in the cross section that had to cut through the wind they would
all land at roughly the same instant wouldn’t they even though they had
different weights yes absolutely OK. I think Galileo did that yeah as a matter of fact he did I think off the
Tower of Pisa didn’t he? yes absolutely around 1610 or so Somewhere around the early 1600’s and showed that a large weight and a small weight hit the ground at the same time. From the top of the Tower of Pisa yep yes as a matter of fact you can do
that experiment it’s not that tough to do you know going back one last time to
Einstein and Newton even though Einstein is more accurate
description of something called gravity than Newton was Einstein didn’t
supersede Newton and invalidate everything in Newtonian gravity because
we can still use Newtonian physics to build bridges, Right? Yes and here is a problem I had when I started college. I think a lot of people did have the same problem. In science we sometimes use very very good approximations There are some things we can measure that we don’t measure to the very last decimal place. that’s what’s going on here. And that is with Newton’s Laws and Newtonian dynamics in systems that are not moving very fast or large gravitational fields it works out fine. And the difference between that and the Einsteinian gravity is totally, totally negligible. You don’t have to get involved with tensor calculus when you are building static structures yeah and
as I recall one of the problems that Einstein addressed early on was the the
retro was the precession of the orbit of mercury I believe it’s the correct term
and Newtonian physics made an error in that prediction of that orbit of the
planet Mercury around the Sun that was on the order of a couple of arc seconds
per century so as long as you weren’t So as long as you weren’t worried about those last one or two arc
seconds of precession over a century Newtonian physics predicted the orbit of
mercury Einstein just cleaned up those last couple little arc seconds so yeah that’s one way of looking at it. it is the ultimate ultimate fine details you know you just
describe it a little better this that really it doesn’t matter really if you
describe PI to five decimal places or a hundred and then once you get to a
hundred what’s the difference in accuracy between a hundred and a hundred
and fifty decimal places but there is a difference. Yes there is a difference but for the calculations we need to do it you don’t need to worry about it. okay well thank you very much
for stopping by today and taking a few minutes with us hopefully we’ll get to
chat again another time and preferably to avoid a couple of technical issues
that we had earlier but do you have any parting words for the viewers Ah no but I would ask all the viewers to really take some time and look at how science works. I think it is really important it is what our society is based on and it is based on facts. And I would encourage them to find out the scientific facts and all the other facts that they need.. Well thank you again and I really appreciate you stopping by and hope to talk to you again
sometime in the future take care. Thank you well guys thank you very much for
stopping by this is not the first time that I have called out the Flat Earth
community on mis using scientific citations but it was very nice to
actually get the source person of the citation that they misused and get some
comments from them and as a side benefit we got a lot of other good information
from Dr.Pinizzotto who is a master educator and demonstrated that in these
three interviews so hopefully we’re gonna do a few more of these I have a
couple of people and some phone calls out right now so maybe we’ll have some
more of these interviews coming up if you like them in the meantime this is
Bob the Science Guy signing out from Northern Michigan make sure you hit that
like subscribe in the little bell icon over there I’d really appreciate having
you on Team Bob take care guys

Sorry Bob, the audio is not acceptable. I suggest you delete this triplet of videos, as they are rather important, and overdub fresh audio from your caption notes. Possibly adding to your studio skills as well.

We learned that raising a rock (or other mass) imparted potential energy to it. Sort of like accelerating a mass to a higher relative speed increases its energy. The potential energy for the rock comes from the gravitation field of course. In the case of acceleration of a mass, it could be the result of a rocket engine imparting energy to a spaceship. A lot of energy has to be taken back from the spaceship to allow it to safely re-enter the earth's atmosphere. Remember; your toes aren't so good at removing the "potential energy" of the rock.

Yep. I am standing at the edge of a cliff. I lift up a rock 5 feet. It gains energy, and wants to return to where it started. I move it horizontally over the edge of the cliff. I drop it. It falls 5 feet and hovers over the edge of the cliff.

    Yeah, flat Earth physics…

By the way, sometimes you can remove the “tinny” sound by playing around with equalization between 7-9kHz. You can try Audacity, which is freeware.

I really like your new decoration. You will have to commend the artist for me.

I was just watching Creaky Blinder before I stopped over here, he was commenting on a video by a young and impressionable lady who was doing her own "research" on flat earth. I am starting to view some of these content creators as predators. They are only creating for their own personal gains. They don't care whose minds they warp.

Its kind of a shame really we have this advanced technology and people misuse it to disinformation people. If we could all use it for the betterment of mankind we could go so much father but instead we have to use it to hold back these people that pull us backwards. What a waste of resources.

Thankyou for doing what you do. Lets keep making on the straight and narrow.

Taking scientific papers and presentations out of context and cherry picking phrases to suit their own narrative, has always been stock-in-trade for flerfs. Most flerfs, somewhat surprisingly perhaps, have the sense to only misquote, misrepresent and cherry-pick dead scientists or natural philosophers, who are not able defend their work and correct those who misrepresent them. Anthony Riley likes to show just why he was awarded DFOTY 2019 by misrepresenting and misquoting living scientists and engineers such as Dr. Russell Pinizzotto and George Musser who are alive and well and able to publicly correct his "misunderstandings".

Audio quality aside, It became pretty clear, that Dr. Pinizzotto is not a source, that supports flat earth.
So Liely did misappropriate the doctors credibility in the typical flat earth fashion.

Yesterday the creeky blinder did release a video about a young girl, that fell victim to the flat earth propaganda.
One thing that convinced her is the story about the flight, that you debunked earlier.
So getting to these young minds first is key. And I'm glad the algorithm mostly works in the favour of reality these days.

Since this channel is about reestablishing scientific correctness, let’s clarify that the story of Galileo dropping balls from the top of Pisa tower was likely a legend, many authors report that he actually worked with inclines in a “lab”, that gave him many advantages in terms of repeating and measuring the results

proving that density isn't was "pushes" thing to the ground as flerfers claim, all you have to do is take a helium balloon in a vomit comet. if it's true then the balloon should still move towards the ceiling, if not it will just float in front of you. i mean the fact that anything "floats" in a vomit comet proves flerfers wrong about density, but a helium balloon not rushing upwards when released, as well as everything else not rushing downwards, just leaves no room for denial.

    case in point: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ypBf9ebw1Y

if it's density, then explain that flerfers.

Ill watch and like, but theese people arent interesting by themselves, mostely anyways. Its not like archimedes and actual physics confuses me or that i cant say for sure when its misrepresented. But having the evidence on hand is allways handy.

Wait. Do you expect me to believe that Dr Pinizzotto wasn't contacted about his comments? But that means that Anthony isn't doing his research correctly. How dare you imply that. It's not like he didn't make an entire video against Astronomy Live for his faulty "cool moon light" experiment after only watching the first part of the video where Astronomy Live was showing the WRONG way to run the experiment. And it's not like Anthony didn't watch the entire video to the end so as to make sure he was understanding the content. And it's not like Anthony later defended his incompetence by saying he is not responsible for researching the material he presents in the videos that he produces. Then again, Anthony did try to use that Einstein letter as evidence all the while hiding the obvious fake stamp because he knew that made it fake. So yea, Anthony is an upstanding person because, reasons.

The Einstein vs Newton thing really needs to be shoved back in Anthony's face more. If you are cutting firewood you don't care about the size of the logs down to the millimeter. If you are getting open heart surgery you want the doctor to use the most precise measurement possible. You use the measurement that fits the situation. Millimeters don't become "fake" when cutting wood, they just aren't needed or used. As with everything Anthony it is childish at best.
