The purpose of the grant is to help students get ready to take calculus in the fall semester. Now there’s a number of reasons for that, particularly in engineering, if students are delayed by even one semester in their curriculum, it can cost the family $10,000. If they’re delayed by a full year, it can cost the family $20,000. So we want the students to be on-track and take calculus when they come here. Some of them are not ready to take calculus, and that we determine by giving them a placement test. If students fall below a certain threshold on that placement test, Then they will be recommended to take a remediation-type program in the summer before they get here.
