3 Times Science Debunked the Paranormal

3 Times Science Debunked the Paranormal

[♪♩INTRO] From spooky ghosts to UFOs to mysterious,
floating lights, there are all kinds of weird stories out there that seem impossible to
explain unless there’s something paranormal going on. But even the creepiest campfire stories can
be debunked with the right questions and some careful observation. So here are three times scientists looked
into something strange and found a perfectly rational — although in some cases, still
very unsettling — scientific explanation for it. Like in one supposedly-haunted lab in the
UK. In the late 1990s, people who worked there
could often feel waves of fear or shivers, and one engineer even saw a terrifying gray
apparition from the corner of his eye. But he figured there had to be a reason for
it. This engineer also happened to be a fencer,
and one day he brought his foil — a thin fencing sword — to the lab to adjust it for
an upcoming competition. When he set the foil in a clamp, the blade
started vibrating, almost like a ghost was shaking it. Except, it wasn’t a ghost. By moving the foil around the lab and observing
it, he figured out that the room contained a low-frequency sound wave, which he eventually
traced back to the lab’s new fan. That explained pretty much all of the spooky
stuff that had been going on. The foil shook because the sound wave was
at its resonant frequency, a frequency that easily made it start vibrating. All objects have one, and it’s also why
if you run your finger around a glass, it’ll sing a nice little song. This wave had a frequency of about 19 Hertz,
or 19 vibrations per second, which is right below the range of human hearing — what’s
called infrasound. Studies have shown that strong infrasound
waves can cause uneasiness and dizziness, which can seem a lot like a haunting. Because infrasound vibrates through your body’s
tissues, it can affect your sense of balance, your breathing rate, and your blood pressure. It can even cause apparitions, since the resonant
frequency of your eyeballs is also about 19 Hertz. So the ghost the engineer saw was caused by
his eyeballs vibrating, which is super freaky, actually, and kind of gross to think about, but at least
it wasn’t an actual ghost. In some stories, something that’s said to
be paranormal is caught on camera, too. The Internet is full of photos of long, rod-like
insects with multiple sets of wings, and they’ve been passed off as things like UFOs, aliens,
and interdimensional creatures. It turns out they’re just bugs — usually
moths. The creation of these ghostly images has to do with how cameras work. Insects usually beat their wings a lot faster
than a camera can capture an image so something like a moth will flap several times while a camera is recording one frame. And as it’s capturing that image, the insect
is also moving across its field of view. The result is that the moth looks like a blurry, elongated rod with multiple sets
of wings. If you’ve ever tried to take a long exposure
photograph of anything, you have probably seen something like this. The length of the rod is related to how fast
the insect is moving and how far it is from the camera. The faster and closer it flies, the longer
your mysterious interdimensional visitor. Cryptozoologists call these “rods” or “skyfish” I like both of those names a lot, but as cool as they sound and as cool as it would be to have alien Interdimensional skyfish flying
around us, these are just mostly moths flying to a different beat. Finally, if you’ve been to the tiny city
of Marfa, Texas, you might’ve driven down US Highway 67 and spotted what looked like a
UFO in the distance. On some nights, these so-called Marfa Lights
appear above the horizon, hovering and blinking like spaceships. There’s even a viewing area for them along
the road. But surprise: They’re also not aliens. Local university students thought they might
be caused by car headlights, so in 2004, they did experiments to shed some light
on the situation. They set up cameras to monitor the lights
and a box to measure the traffic on Highway 67. They also tracked a car driving down the road
to see if the highway was directly visible from the Marfa Lights viewing area. The results weren’t that spooky or surprising:
they found that the Marfa Lights were probably caused by the atmosphere reflecting headlights
from the highway. There was a direct relationship between the
number of Marfa Lights and the amount of traffic, and the group at the viewing area could even
tell which lights corresponded to the car they were tracking. In 2008, these findings were supported by
another team, who found that the lights could also come from streetlights or campfires. You’d think it would be pretty easy to tell
whether what you’re looking at is a pair of headlights or an alien spaceship, but the
Marfa Lights are tricky because they don’t really look like headlights. They’re often magnified and kind of shimmer. That comes from a mirage, where light rays
bend and displace an image. Specifically, it’s caused by what’s known
as a superior mirage, where an image appears above where it should be. It happens when a layer of warmer air sits
on top of cooler air, which is the opposite of normal — usually, the lower layers of
the atmosphere are warmer because they’re heated by the Earth’s surface. Air at different temperatures has different
densities, so it bends light at different angles. When light rays pass through a temperature
inversion, they can bend in a way that creates an image above where the object actually is. And to be clear, when it comes to the Marfa
Lights, that object is just a car’s headlights on a lonely road. Not an alien spaceship. There are plenty of other stories of the paranormal
that are still unexplained — whether because they can’t be replicated, or there isn’t
enough data about them to come to any conclusions. But sometimes, all you need are the right
questions and a healthy dose of skepticism. Also, maybe a fencing foil. Thanks for watching this episode of SciShow. Firstly I would like to say that I have absolutely no scientific background at all nor am I closed minded. However when it comes to the matter of proving paranormal activity it is my opinion and experience that one has to personally encounter such occurrences to be truly convinced of their authenticity.I say this because I have experienced those occurrences which no scientist nor scientific explanation can convince me that I've been mistaken.

No matter what no one will ever prove they exist or prove they dont. They will always be an excuse. If they did exist and you had one standing right in front of you and you have a full on convo with it and record it. Still no one would ever believe it… NEVER.

Millions, if not billions, of people have encountered ghosts, demons, etc. over the past few thousand years. Having seen a full bodied apparition multiple times while with different people, I can say that I am 100% certain that ghosts exist. Therefore, it would also make sense for me to believe that other realms exist, which means that realms named Heaven and Hell probably exist. Matter is just an illusion and there is far more to reality than what we see while our consciousness is confined to a brain. SCIENCE has proven it.

People dont believe in ghosts till they see one. I know for a fact the spirit world is real. I have seen and heard spirits for years. I have spirit voices on video. The last I captured was last week. I take voice lessons and record myself to document my progress. I was singing and kept hearing voices. ( I am use to it and experience it daily ) I was singing landslide by fleetwood Mac. I had sang the words ' I've been" and stopped to try and hear what the voices were saying. I have it recorded too. A female spirit was there and was singing too. After I sang the words I've been a very high pitched fast voice is heard singing " fraid of changing" those were the lyrics after the first two words I sang. The spirit was not some random noise or voice from a radio being picked up. The voice knew the song and finished it. After that a very high almost chipmunk voice said " love you" a mans voice was heard singing scales which is what I had been doing. There was a whistle while I was singing and then the same voice that said love you said "look here" I play piano and asked if the spirits like it when I play music. A giant orb appeared then a loud female voice replied yes. A second loud female voice with a heavy Spanish accent said " Arrone, sing a song" that's not my name but they always respond to what is going on or what I say. I am more than happy to share my audio with anyone and welcome it to be analyzed. I am a 46 year old woman with an android phone over 9 years old and not echnical skills. I am a retired hairstylist and have no idea how to edit or fake multiple voices in tones and speeds that humans dont speak in. I think its crazy that people close their eyes tot evidence all around them and convince themselves that every person takes their time and energy to fake something that they make no.money from doing and they get labeled as crazy or ignorant when sharing their evidence. I have been documenting my evidence for the past few years. I have very little posted so far because I dont understand editing apps so I only post short clips that require none. I am happy to send anyone the voices I recorded and described earlier. See for yourself .. Please try and find someway to prove if they were faked . I just want people to know the truth.. Once people stop denying things in our world that our real we can move forward even more. This is life after death… People who know the truth are trying to only share what they know is true. Nobody puts themselves through ridicule when there nothing to be gained but ridicule. Open your eyes.

I lived in a house where you could hear sighing, and what sounded like a bouncing ball. My dad, a plumber, solved it, the person who unstalled the plumbing was a DIY kind of guy, and had put the valves in wrong throughout the whole house! Once the plumbing was fixed, no sounds. Also, I'm an exterminator, and a lot of noises are caused by rodents and even ants in the walls. I always wanted to try solving a haunted house, it would be very interesting.

Eh, the world’s more interesting when you believe in the paranormal and supernatural. We have allowed science to remove us so far from our spiritual side as humans that we don’t keep an open mind to the possibility that there are just some things we can’t yet explain using science (at least not at this point in our technological development).

The materialist world view does not allow any ideas of anything paranormal. They refuse to apply the scientific method to any of these phenomenon and when some scientists do study these these phenomenon they are not published in mainstream journals. This video didn't really debunk anything accept one story which we were given no details about when and where it happened. Then it just claims that any strange movement caught on camera is just a moth. There have been odd things filmed which are much larger than moths and insects and taken at times of the year when moths are not around. There was no evidence provided .

Well, this video demonstrates the main, and base reasons, as to why those who experience and believe "paranormal" entities, ghosts, inter-dimensional beings, and all that. What this video demonstrates is knowledge, facts, science. And all of that requires a person to understand the knowledge being given to them, such as, "…creates a standing wave." Making a statement like that is exactly what the science based facts are, and that jargon is exactly the information that those who believe in myths ignore and don't bother to then educate themselves on that actual information and why it directly explains what they believe is a ghost or a dimensional beings or whatever.

I am not here to argue, nor, try and discuss the paranormal with individuals who think they have it all worked out. Although, I will say this, "You're all 'Ghost'." You were ghost/spirits/spiritual entities, long before you took on a physical body. You don't believe because you are afraid to believe. Your minds are not ready. And "Ghost?" They do not give a rats ass what you think. They do not need you to believe, for them to exist. I have studied the paranormal for 3 decades. Alongside scientist, FBI agents, Police officers, 4 of the top television conglomerates in America, physicist and psychiatrist. There is nothing more rewarding than to stand beside an individual who "Thinks," they have this world all figured out, and watch them crumble into little pieces when they hear a voice without a physical body speak to them. It is okay you do not believe. As a matter of fact, "It is better that you don't."

All of these were "low-hanging fruit". The "rods" were debunkable just using logic. When I first came across the so-called paranormal phenomena, I immediately knew they were bugs. The Marfa lights, same thing. Immediately, you can tell they're some sort of lights caused by humans, likely vehicles. The first one was a little trickier to figure out. Had I been there though, I would have likely pinpointed a source for the "paranormal activity" simply because I seem to be able to detect sounds above and below what humans can typically hear and I can use this to track it down. If I entered a room with a 19hz sound, I would "feel it" and be able to "feel" the intensity of it. After being in the room long enough, I would have naturally figured out that a part of the room felt more intense than the rest and my natural curiosity would have made me start digging to try to figure it out.

This all being said, I have experienced plenty of things that I could not find any reasonable explanation to. I have also experienced plenty of things that I did find explanations to, but those explanations are outside of what science would consider. Due to my apparent heightened senses and apparent expanded senses, the world is different to me. I can hear things most can't and I can "feel" things most can't. I also might be able to see things that most can't, but I have yet to be able to verify this. Some businesses have sounds in them that it seems nobody can hear but drives me insane. I suspect some piece of equipment causing the sounds, but being a business and it driving me crazy, I simply leave to never return.

Science can capture real ghosts/paranormal stuff on film in theory, only if science figures out how to convert frequencies much higher than gamma rays into visible light. All atoms vibrate at frequencies much higher than gamma rays so to capture real ghost/paranormal stuff on film, the camera will need to be capable of capturing frequencies higher than frequencies of atoms. Think about it. Everything is energy, frequency and vibration/resonance. Spiritual realms vibrate at frequencies higher than material/physical realm of atoms/matter.

I actually believe that 99,9% of all ghosts, ufo's, and other "unexplained" stuff is just totally normal, if rare, things that people who don't know about science and who believe strongly in ghosts take for something paranormal. They believe too much and know too little. Also, electricity and soundwaves (as you pointed out) have been tested and caused people who didn't believe in ghosts to be absolutely certain there was "something" with them. These magnetic, electric fields and soundswaves occur naturally here and there, causing people to think these places are haunted.

Yeah but if you spell Marfa backwards it spells Afram. Think about it.

No one believes in ghost/spirits until you experience one!

If science could explain ghost/spirits it would send science back into caveman times and change everything we know or everything they want us to know!

the rods are real. I have a recording of 2 of them each 3 to 4 feet long, angelic style mini wings and moving through the air like an inch worm moves over the ground. not a moth.

As skeptical as I am, I’ve had some experiences I can’t explain. Wish I could as it would be simpler. I question what death means constantly, but I can’t let that scare me off from living my best life either. Wish we had the knowledge of proving or disproving by now. The unknown can be scary.

The marfa lights were not debunked. Do a little more research. All you said is what they might be, not what they are.

Ghosts are generally fraudsters trying to pull some stunt to make lots of money, like scaring visitors of a museum in order to run an art forgery scheme, scaring potential miners in a town rumored to have gold mines in order to mine it all for oneself, or as a decoy/distraction while you kidnap dogs who'd compete on a dog competition in order for your own dog to win.

Science as much as I love it proves that reality is often times disappointing. Come on at least let us have ghosts smh.

Yes some of the paranormal shows are faking. I love science and using it to made life easier. But I know for a fact that people have had spirits “bother” them. For you non-believers I pray you don’t have to go through hell on earth to believe souls can return good and bad.

🤔 If the theory of multiverses holds to be emphatic, by means that every option has happened, then it is plausible that one earth was visited by “aliens” and one earth is haunted by “ghosts”. Thus science has proven the existence of aliens and ghosts. 😉

I think everything has a logical explanation. I don’t think anything remains mysterious.

When you say “probably”, that isn’t definite therefore not a debunk.
