2.8 Intro to Arithmetic Sequences


Write the next three terms of the
arithmetic sequence: 10, 7.5, 5, 2.5…. First, we will use a table to organize the terms and find the pattern. To get 7.5 from 10,
add -2.5. To get 5 from 7.5, add a -2.5, and to get 2.5 from 5, add a -2.5. Each term is 2.5 less than the previous term, so the common difference is -2.5. So we want to add -2.5 to a term to find the next term. Adding -2.5 to 2.5, we get 0. Adding -2.5 to 0, we get -2.5. Adding -2.5 to -2.5, we get -5. So the next three terms are 0, -2.5, and -5.
